Windows Live Mail Export your contacts from Windows Live Mail

This email tutorial teaches you how to export contacts out of Windows Live Mail. Exporting your contacts can be especially useful if you are also using another email program (like Microsoft Outlook, at work), and do not wish to create all your Windows Live Mail contacts from scratch in the other email client.

Exporting contact files from Windows Live Mail Windows Live Mail lets you export contacts in two formats: virtual business card (VCF file - or vCard), and comma-separated values (CSV). Since these are nearly universally supported, you should not have any trouble importing in another email application the contacts you exported from Windows Live Mail.

Exporting contacts out of Windows Live Mail

Launch Windows Live Contacts Exporting contacts from Windows Live Mail is done through the address book, "Windows Live Contacts". To launch Windows Live Contacts, click the address book icon in the bottom left corner of Windows Live Mail's main window. You can also open it with this keyboard shortcut:

Tip: press Ctrl+Shift+C to quickly open the Windows Live Contacts window.

Export Windows Live Mail Contacts

Windows Live Mail does not currently have a function to export your contacts to Outlook. This is a very simple tool that will allow you to do just that. This tool was not created or endorsed by Microsoft and is to be used at your own risk.

Instructions

Step 1: Access Your Contacts
  1. Login to Windows Live Mail
  2. Click on the Contacts shortcut
  3. Click the "Print Contacts" icon that's labeled with a printer icon
  4. Wait for a new window to open with your contacts
Step 2: Copy Your Contacts
  1. In the new window, right-click the white background and choose "View Source". Notepad will open with some text.
  2. In Notepad, go to the "Edit" menu and choose "Select All"
  3. Go to the "Edit" menu again and choose "Copy"
  4. Right-click in the text input box below and choose "Paste"
  5. Click the "Export" button below
Step 3: Save Your Contacts
  1. Wait for exporting to complete (a download dialog box will appear when done)
  2. Choose to save the "contacts.csv" file to your desktop
  3. Open Outlook and import the file on your desktop
